Protect plants for winter

Give your delicate plants the care they need to survive the winter. Discover simple ways to protect them from frost, wind and wet weather.

  1. Protect Tender Plants

Move delicate plants to a sheltered location like a cold frame, greenhouse, or conservatory. Monitor watering needs, especially for potted plants. If you don't have a covered space, consider building a cold frame or using a mini-greenhouse.

  1. Versatile Plant Protection

Horticultural fleece is a valuable tool for protecting plants from frost and cold weather. Use it to cover plants in winter and during late spring frosts. Adjust the number of layers and securing methods based on the plant's needs. Even greenhouse plants can benefit from added protection during extreme cold. Remember to remove the fleece when the weather warms up.

  1. Protect Your Plants with Organic Matter

Well-rotted organic matter, like compost or manure, can safeguard your plants during winter. Apply a thick layer to perennials and tubers to protect them from frost and nourish them for spring growth.

  1. Protect Container Plants

Move container plants to a sheltered spot and group them together for easier protection. Cover them with horticultural fleece if necessary to shield them from frost.

  1. Improve Drainage for Potted Plants

Elevate your pots using feet or bricks to enhance drainage, especially in wet conditions. Direct contact with concrete can impede drainage and lead to root rot.
