Refresh compost in pots

Learn how to refresh the compost in your pots and keep your container plants thriving. This easy process provides essential nutrients and improves soil structure for healthy growth.

Essential Supplies for Refreshing Container Plants

Before you begin refreshing your container plants, gather your supplies to make the process smooth and efficient. Here's what you'll need:

  • a hand fork,
  • some fresh compost,
  • gardening gloves.

And of course, don't forget a watering can to give your refreshed plants a good drink. If you like to add a decorative touch, have some pebbles on hand to top off your pots.

Best Compost for Refreshing Pots

While there are many compost options available, we recommend using a high-quality, peat-free, multi-purpose compost for the best results when refreshing your pots.

The Art of Refreshing Pots: Compost, Roots, and Care

Carefully loosen the old compost with a hand fork, working around the surface roots and edges of the pot. Gently remove as much old compost from around the root ball as possible. Now, replenish with fresh, multi-purpose compost, ensuring good contact with the roots and no air pockets. Water well and add a layer of pebbles or gravel on top to help retain moisture and prevent weed growth.

Watering Potted Plants: Keeping Them Hydrated and Healthy

Potted plants need a bit more attention when it comes to watering. Since they dry out faster than those in the ground, it's crucial to check the moisture level regularly. Stick your finger a few centimeters into the compost to feel how dry it is. Water thoroughly when needed, especially during the warmer months. Remember to feed your container plants regularly from spring through summer, as they quickly use up the nutrients in the pot. In winter, elevate your pots with pot feet to improve drainage and prevent waterlogging.
