Winter can be a harsh season for many plants, especially those from warmer climates. Even hardy native plants can benefit from some extra protection during cold, wet weather. Here are our top tips to help your garden thrive through the winter months.
Tips to protect your plants in winter
Protecting Potted Plants:
- Elevate Your Pots: Raise pots on pot feet to improve drainage and prevent waterlogging.
- Insulate Your Pots: Wrap pots in fleece or bubble wrap to protect roots from frost.
- Group Your Pots: Cluster pots together to create a microclimate and provide mutual insulation.
- Seek Shelter: Position pots against a sheltered wall to shield them from harsh weather.
Protecting Tender Plants:
- Mulching: Apply a thick layer of mulch to garden beds to protect plant roots from frost and improve soil health.
- Lifting Tender Bulbs: Dig up tender bulbs like dahlias, gladioli, and begonias after the first frost. Dry them off and store them in a cool, dry place until spring.
- Winterizing Banana Plants: Cut back the leaves and wrap the plant in horticultural fleece and hessian. In colder regions, build a protective frame and cover it with plastic sheeting.
- Overwintering Geraniums: Move tender geraniums indoors before frost, prune them back, and place them in a sunny spot. Water sparingly.
By following these tips, you can help your garden weather the winter and emerge vibrant and healthy in the spring.
