How to water your plants in summer

Summer heat = thirsty plants. Keep them watered! Here are our top tips for effective summer watering.

Why plants need water

Just like us, plants need water for hydration, enabling cellular function. Furthermore, water dissolves soil nutrients, allowing plants to absorb them. Consistent watering is crucial for both survival and nourishment. This is especially true for summer plants, which often experience higher temperatures and increased evapotranspiration, leading to greater water demands. While some plants have adapted to drought, all require water to live.

Garden watering equipment

Watering plants doesn't require fancy tools. A simple container will suffice in a pinch, but a variety of equipment is available to make the task easier and more efficient.

  • While watering cans are affordable and effective for small-scale watering, they become inefficient and impractical for large gardens or numerous pots.
  • Hoses are definitely easier than watering cans, but you can still end up wasting water. A spray gun lets you put the water exactly where you need it, which is way better!
  • For hands-free watering, consider installing an automated irrigation system. Options like soaker hoses, drip hoses, or sprinklers can be programmed with timers or controlled via smartphone apps.

5 Tips on watering plants effectively

  1. When temperatures are cooler, such as in the evening or early morning, water your plants to reduce evaporation.

  2. Don't rely on rain alone for container plants. Check soil moisture with your finger, as foliage can block rainfall from reaching the compost.

  3. In the first year, thoroughly water new trees and shrubs at least once a week. Deep watering every few days is more beneficial than daily light watering, promoting strong roots and drought resilience.

  4. Reduce your water consumption by using a water butt to harvest rainwater from your roof for plant watering.

  5. Going away for a few days? No problem! Just grab a capped bottle, poke a hole in the lid, fill it up, and stick it upside down in your pot. It'll slowly water your plant while you're gone.
