Home Garden Shop Alpine Plants

If you are looking to add a splash of colour to your garden just after the snows melt away and spring is in the air, what you need is an assortment of splendidly coloured Alpine plants. As the name would imply, the technical reason for the name is because they do well in extremely cold regions ‘above the treelines.’ However, according to the Alpine Garden Society of Great Britain, Alpine plants are loosely considered those that weather the winter well and are ideal for rockeries and rock gardens.

Ideally, they like to grow at a 45 degree angle (but can be planted normally in raised borders or containers) and prefer bright sunny spots, they will come back year after year if well cared for.

Popular Varieties of Alpine Plants

While there are dozens of varieties, some Alpine plants are simply more popular than others. Among those most in-demand here in the South of England are:

  • Pulsatilla Vulgaris – Pasque Flower
  • Dianthus – Pink Flower
  • Sempervivum – Houseleeks
  • Aubrietia

While both Pasque Flower and Pink Flower are lovely Alpine plants that do well in cold climates in high altitudes, there is just something special about Sempervivum, which is an amazing Alpine succulent and Aubrietia that spreads like a purple carpet throughout your rock garden. These are all beautiful plants, and as we mentioned above, are perfect for the gardener who wants new life the very moment the frosts begin to thaw.

Caring for Alpine Plants

One of the things which the hobbyist gardener loves most about Alpine plants is the ease at which they can be cared for. In fact, many times after you’ve given them a good watering initially when they are planted, you may not ever have to water them again. The only thing you may want to be careful of is over-watering them because they can quickly develop root rot. Alpines like well drained gravelly soil. These do best if planted in spring or autumn but, you really could get them in the ground at any time as long as it isn’t frozen.

We mainly stock the most popular varieties of alpine but can source more unusual plants through one of our specialist suppliers. This year, add a lovely Alpine rock garden to your home so that next year you can begin enjoying your garden earlier. Stop in to see our popular assortment of Alpine plants or if you have a question, give us a call on 01727 853340. We are happy to assist you in any way we can.
