Taking Care of Your Summer Garden
With summer in full swing now is the time to put your feet up and enjoy the fruits of your labours with a glass of wine or gin & tonic. BBQ season is definitely upon us and it’s great to spend our time outside enjoying our beautiful gardens. With that in mind today we decided to take a look at taking care of your summer garden.
Lawn and Plant Care
Whilst it’s hot and sunny we have to make sure that our plants and lawn don’t dry out. The best time to water your garden is late in the evening when the sun goes down – this gives the water plenty of time to permeate into the ground without burning off! If you can’t manage the evening then first thing in the morning is just as good. Don’t water in the middle of the day if it is very hot outside as you risk scorching your plants.
The Vegetable Plot
The veg plot should be looking well established now with everything from potatoes to runner beans starting to come through. Depending on your planting schedule you might be able to start harvesting some of your early crops and salad leaves should be growing beautifully now.
Now is still a great time to plant new salad leaves as well as turnips, fennel, carrots and beans. Leeks and brassicas can still be planted for winter harvests too. We have a great range of winter vegetable plants now for sale.
Fruit Trees and Bushes
Fruit should be starting to ripen on bushes. Pick fruit once they are ripe and easy to pull off – no yanking! Now is also the perfect time to prune fruit bushes – particularly gooseberries and currants which must be pruned at this time.
The Flower Garden
There’s still plenty of late flowering plants available to plant (we have lovely selection of colourful perennial) and if your garden isn’t looking at its best now is a great time to start filling in some of the blank spaces and plotting out new beds. Pruning and weeding will undoubtedly be necessary at this time of year, if you are pruning make sure that you did this late to avoid plants drying out.
Time to Relax
July and August are the best times to relax and enjoy your garden so why not have some friends over and enjoy your hard work, have a BBQ and bathe in our short summer – you know it will be raining again within a couple of months!
Don’t forget we stock charcoal, briquettes, gas and more to fuel your BBQ as well as great range of home grown salad crops, sauces and cheese in our Farm Shop.
