Like many businesses, Carpenters Nursery is very concerned about the impact we have on the environment. Luckily, we are a small business, so we are free to make changes to the way we do things quickly, in order to benefit the environment and our customers.
How Single-Use Plastics Affect the Environment
Single-use plastics are a scourge on the environment. There are around 46k pieces of micro and macro plastic per square mile of ocean. This plastic never goes away. It ends up being ingested by marine animals and is absorbed into eco-systems above and below the waves. Plastic may be a very versatile product, but millions of tons are dumped every year.
Our addiction to plastic is causing tremendous harm to the environment and we’d like to do our part to reduce its use as much as possibe. We kep packaging of our products to a minimum, only use plastic bags for fresh food items that can’t be sold loose of deteriorate quickly if left in the open. We encourage our customers to use recyclable bags and re-use the cardboard boxes we receive our goods in.
It’s Time to Generate Less Waste
Although the majority of the fresh produce we sell aren’t in packaging, practically all other food products we buy in are packaged in some way. In order to offer customers a package free option for the purchase of things like pasta, lentils, rice, cereals, herbs and oils, we have formed a partnership with The Refill Pantry.
The Refill Pantry opened in 2018, as a way to introduce plastic-free shopping to the town centre of St Albans. It’s not the only zero-waste store in the UK, but it’s nice and local to us, so we decided we could join forces for the benefit of the local community!
When you visit the Carpenter’s Nursery Farm Shop to pick up some fruit and veg, plants, and garden equipment, visit the Refill Pantry and stock up your food essentials.
Visit the Refill Pantry
The Refill Pantry is an independent food and natural products retailer with a commitment to zero waste. Customers bring their own containers and use these to fill up on pasta, rice, nuts, chocolates, and liquid products such as shampoo, conditioner, and household cleaning products. Everything sold by the Refill Pantry is ethically sourced from local brands, with organic goods a speciality. They even sell reusable products such as paper bags and metal straws.
The idea behind the Refill Pantry is really simple: all you need to do is bring some plastic containers. Fill them up with the goods you need and then weigh the container and product to give you a price. You only pay for what you take, so no paying for packaging you don’t need.
We Stock Plastic Refillable Containers!
Don’t panic if you don’t have your own containers, you can now purchase these in the shop!
