The Great British Public loves a good local farm shop. It’s a chance for everyone to buy their produce direct from growers rather than selecting pre-packaged fruit and vegetables in a sterile supermarket environment. Farm shops are good for everyone, so let’s find out why!
Carpenter’s Nursery has been selling fresh fruit and vegetables direct to consumers for more than 90 years. Back when we started our business, farm shops didn’t exist, but in recent years, they have become an important place for local producers to sell directly to the public.
Great for Consumers
Most of us are accustomed to buying fruit and vegetables in the supermarket. Produce there is often pre-packaged and shipped in from overseas. It may have spent a week or more in transit and you won’t ever meet the farmer who planted the seeds or cultivated the crop.
When you buy fresh vegetables from Carpenter’s Nursery, it is a very different experience. Everything we sell in our farm shop is freshly picked, either that morning or the day before. We pick, wash, and display the best produce, so when you buy some carrots, tomatoes, kale or cabbages you are guaranteed it’s as fresh and as tasty as it can be.
Good for the Environment
Buying fresh produce from local growers is much better for the environment than buying mass-produced fruit and vegetables from a national supermarket. Our produce is less intensively produced. It isn’t transported from over long distances and we don’t run a huge fleet of trucks to deliver our crops to local suppliers.
Good for the Local Economy
We support many local businesses by stocking their produce, too. Visit our farm shop and you can pick up all kinds of interesting products to tempt your palate and add flavour to your dishes. We sell granola, cheese, chutney, honey and oils, as well as Redbournbury bread and Clover free range eggs. We even sell locally distilled vodka, gin and handmade chocolate if you want to treat yourself!
Everything we sell, whether we grow it at our site or it is sourced from local suppliers, is less intensively produced, made with local quality ingredients. This provides our customers – i.e. you – with a range of tasty, healthy, organic, fresh and affordable produce.
You don’t need to wrestle with the crowds when you visit the Carpenter’s Nursery farm shop. You can browse the shelves at your leisure and if you need some advice on what to buy, just ask! We don’t claim to be experts on nouveau cuisine, but we do know all there is to know about carrots and cabbages!
With Christmas fast approaching (not that you need reminding!), now is an excellent time to check out what we stock in the Carpenter’s Farm Shop. Pick up some Cherry Tree chutney to go with your Wobbly Bottom cheese and crackers or cold cuts, try the Redbournbury organic bread, and snack on some Snaffling Pig Pork Scratchings.
And if it all gets too much, pour a glass of local beer from either Farr Brew, Three Brewers or Tring Brewery while you plan your Christmas.
We hope to see you soon!
